Conventional Machinist
GSE Dynamics, Inc., a full-service engineering and manufacturing company located in Hauppauge, NY, is seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Conventional Machinist with expertise in working with fiberglass and metal materials. The ideal candidate will be responsible for operating traditional machining equipment, such as a large industrial planer, lathes, mills, grinders, and drills, to fabricate precision parts and components for fiberglass-based products and will be responsible for precision machining of fiberglass and metal components used in the production of military-grade equipment, parts, and systems. This position requires a strong understanding of both conventional machining processes and the unique properties of fiberglass and metal, and the ability to meet stringent military quality and safety standards.
The successful candidate will join a dynamic team focused on supporting defense and aerospace projects, where attention to detail, quality assurance, and compliance with military specifications are critical.
Duties include:
- Fiberglass and Metal Machining: Use conventional machining tools (e.g., large industrial planer, lathe, milling machine, surface grinder, and drill press) to cut, shape, and finish fiberglass and metal parts according to technical drawings and specifications.
- Material Handling: Safely handle and work with fiberglass and other materials, including sheets, rods, and laminates. Understand the differences in fiberglass grades and resins to ensure proper machining techniques.
- Blueprint and Technical Drawing Interpretation: Read and interpret complex blueprints, technical drawings, and specifications tailored to military applications. Ensure that all parts are fabricated to precise tolerances and meet defense industry standard
- Quality Control: Inspect finished parts for conformance to specifications using measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, and gauges. Make adjustments as needed to ensure high-quality standards are met.
- Machining Adjustments: Set up and adjust machining tools for different tasks, ensuring that machinery is calibrated and in good working order for optimal performance.
- Safety Compliance: Adhere to all safety protocols, including the proper handling of fiberglass materials, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and maintaining a clean and safe work environment.
- Collaboration: Work closely with engineers, supervisors, and other machinists to resolve technical challenges, improve processes, and enhance overall production efficiency.
- Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance and basic troubleshooting on machinery to ensure it operates smoothly and efficiently.
- Documentation and Reporting: Maintain accurate records of work performed, including measurements, inspections, and any modifications to the original designs. Contribute to quality assurance documentation and military compliance reports.
Qualifications:
- Experience: Minimum of [5] years of experience working as a conventional machinist, with specific experience in machining fiberglass or similar composite materials.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency with conventional machining tools (large industrial planer, lathe, milling machine, surface grinder, drill press, etc.) and an understanding of machining techniques specific to fiberglass.
- Knowledge: Solid understanding of fiberglass properties, including its brittleness, fiber orientation, and handling requirements.
- Blueprint Reading: Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and blueprints with a strong attention to detail.
- Problem-Solving: Strong troubleshooting skills and the ability to make adjustments to machining processes when necessary to ensure quality output.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to lift and carry heavy materials up to 40 lbs, stand for extended periods, and work in a physically demanding environment.
